Enrichment toys turn ordinary moments, like breakfast or an afternoon treat, into something your pet gets to work at. Instead of eating from a bowl in thirty seconds, your dog or cat sniffs, licks, nudges, and figures things out. The three most popular types are lick mats, snuffle mats, and puzzle feeders. They all slow things down, but they each engage a different instinct.
Lick mats: calm and slow
A lick mat is a flat, textured mat you spread with soft food. Your pet licks it clean a little at a time, which naturally slows them down and keeps them occupied.
- Best for: quiet time, bath or grooming time, and pets who gulp soft food
- What to spread: wet food, plain yogurt, pureed pumpkin, or pet-safe peanut butter (always check the label for xylitol)
- Tip: freeze a filled mat for a longer-lasting session
Try the SodaPup Honeycomb eMat or Jigsaw Puzzle eMat for dogs and cats, the Farm To Pet small lick mat for cats and little dogs, or the Disco Cowgirl Lick Mat, which has suction cups to hold it in place.
Snuffle mats: sniff and search
A snuffle mat is a pad of fabric strips where you hide dry kibble or small treats. Dogs use their noses to hunt each piece out, a lot like foraging.
- Best for: dogs who love to sniff, and turning dry food into a game
- What to hide: kibble or small dry treats (skip anything wet or sticky)
- Tip: start by scattering food on top, then hide it deeper as your dog gets the idea
Our Adjustable Snuffle Mat folds into a bowl shape for more challenge, and the 3-in-1 Enrichment Tube includes a snuffle ball you can also toss or tug.
Puzzle feeders and treat toys: think it through
Puzzle feeders have sliders, lids, or pockets your pet has to move to reach the food. Treat toys hold kibble inside until your pet works it out.
- Best for: curious, high-energy pets who like a challenge
- What to use: kibble or small treats
- Tip: stay nearby the first few times and show your pet how a slider or lid moves
Start with the Dog Puzzle Slow Feeder, try the West Paw Toppl treat toy, or tuck treats into the legs of the Silly Legz Octopus.
